Ferrosilicon powder is a powdery substance produced by grinding an iron-silicon alloy. It is a widely used ferroalloy material in industrial applications.
Basic Properties
Composition Classification: Based on silicon and impurity content, it can be classified into high-silicon ferrosilicon, ordinary ferrosilicon, low-aluminum ferrosilicon, and high-purity ferrosilicon. Common grades include FeSi45 (silicon content 43%-47%) and FeSi75 (silicon content 72%-75%). There is also low-silicon heavy-medium ferrosilicon powder specifically for mineral processing (typical grade FeSi15#, silicon content only 14%-16%, iron content 80%-83%).
Physical Properties: Ordinary ferrosilicon powder has a density of approximately 4.75 g/cm³, a melting point of around 1200-1400℃, and a common particle size of 40-150 mesh, appearing as a grayish-black powder. Heavy-medium ferrosilicon powder has a density of 6.7-7.1 g/cm³ and is magnetic, facilitating recycling.
Safety Properties: Ferrosilicon powder is an explosive dust. It will slowly react with water or in humid environments to produce hydrogen gas. Production and storage require precautions against moisture, fire, and explosion.
Core Uses: Ferrosilicon powder has applications in multiple industrial sectors, primarily including:
Steelmaking Industry: As a deoxidizer and alloying agent, approximately 3-5 kg is consumed per ton of steel. It removes excess oxygen from steel while improving its strength, hardness, and elasticity. It can also be used as a heating agent for ingot caps to improve ingot recovery rates.
Casting Iron Industry: Used as an inoculant and spheroidizing agent, it inhibits carbide formation, promotes graphite spheroidization, and improves the mechanical properties of ductile iron.
Smelting and Mineral Processing:It is a reducing agent in ferroalloy production (especially suitable for low-carbon ferroalloy production). In the Pidgeon process for magnesium smelting, approximately 1.04-1.1 tons of ferrosilicon powder are consumed per ton of metallic magnesium. Low-silicon heavy medium ferrosilicon powder can be used as a heavy medium in mineral flotation processes such as gold ore, lithium ore, and waste aluminum separation, and can be magnetically separated and reused.
Other Applications: It can be used as a coating for welding electrodes to improve welding quality, in powder metallurgy, and in the manufacture of silicone chemical products. Finely ground ferrosilicon powder can also be used as a suspended phase in mineral processing.
